Deepwater basin

Model tests are carried out in calm water without waves and currents in the deepwater basin. These are mainly resistance and propulsion tests.

The Deepwater basin is 10.5 wide, 5.5 m deep, and 252 m long. That is approximately ten swimming pools placed end to end.

Resistance test

First the model without propeller is towed by the towing carriage and the resistance measured. This is the force needed to tow the model in the water. Then, we look at the wave resistance (how many waves does the ship make) and the propulsion resistance (the current along the vessel).

Propulsion test

Subsequently, the model sails on its own, propelled by the engine and propellers. We investigate the propulsion and the current around the vessel, and calculate the speed-power ratio: how much engine power is required to sail at a certain speed. This can be done with a propeller MARIN has in stock (stock propellers) or with propellers specially designed for the ship. Often, clients want to know the performance of their vessel and propellers with regard to cavitation, vibrations and noise. In these cases, the model is further tested in the Depressurised wave basin in Ede.
